In the sun-baked town of Mesquite Wells, Arizona, a battered flivver rattles down the palm-lined street carrying a rancher known as Whitebush Lambert and his fiery niece, Angelica. The old man is dodging a looming bank foreclosure while Angelica chafes under his tyrannical guardianship and a proposed marriage to a neighboring cattle baron. When three Eastern tourists stumble into a roadside holdup, the tangled web of debt, banditry, and hidden motives begins to tighten.
Cecil Joseph Rackowe, a polished Philadelphia Quaker with more nerve than his trembling hands suggest, finds himself drawn into the drama. He sees past the rough exterior of the rancher and the guarded spirit of the girl, while a jealous rival from New York plots to remove the competition by any means necessary.
As the heat rises and the water table falls, a missing father, a scarred bandit, and a banker with foxlike cunning converge on the ranch. The question is not who will survive the dry season, but which hearts will break when the truth finally surfaces.
