California! Since long ago, the name has held a kind of magic for men. From the time of Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo, men have come here from many different parts of the world. Some of the early pioneers crossed the seas in sailing ships. Some came on foot or in wagon trains. All of them had to face some kind of danger -- mountain snows, burning deserts, savage Native Americans, or ocean storms. These are their stories. (Illustrated by Sabina and Jean Yates.)
