Robert Ervin Howard (1906 - 1936) spent most of his thirty years in the small town of Cross Plains, Texas, but his influence on the development of fantastic literature has far transcended his humble origins. By the time he graduated from high school, Howard was selling regularly to the pulps, and by the time he died of a self-inflicted head injury twelve years later, Howard was making more money from his writings than the town banker was earning from his salary. Howard wrote westerns, pirate stories, tales of the boxing ring, historical adventures, huumorous yarns, and much else in his short career: he was incredibly prolific. But he is chiefly remembered today for his creation of Conan, the huge Cimmerian who slashed his way through the exotic realms of the Hyborian Age, in the reaches of man's prehistoric past eventually making himself King of Aquilonia, the greatest and richest of the Hyborian lands. Today, long after Howard's death, his stories of the colorful barbarian are still being read and enjoyed by a new generation of fantasy readers. Darrell Schweitzer outlines all of Conan's career, from his early beginnings as a mercenery, to the epic battles which resulted in his conquest of Aquilonia.
