Robert Ervin Howard (1906 - 1936) spent most of his thirty years in the small town of Cross Plains, Texas, but his influence on the development of fantastic literature has far transcended his humble origins. By the time he graduated from high school, Howard was selling regularly to the pulps, and by the time he died of a self-inflicted head injury twelve years later, Howard was making more money from his writings than the town banker was earning from his salary.
