Felix Train arrives at his apartment with a revolver, determined to end his life after losing all his money. But something holds his hand back from the trigger each time he tries. When his friend Mortimer Shedd interrupts, Train reveals he is desperate for fifty thousand dollars and hints at a dangerous scheme involving his rival, Ralph Barr.
Barr, a wealthy Wall Street operator, has publicly threatened to kill Train on sight. When Train finally appears at Barr’s mansion, he uses the threat as leverage, forcing Barr to choose between paying a huge sum or facing murder charges. Train points the gun at his own temple and counts down, daring Barr to stop him.
A shot rings out. Train falls dead. Barr claims it was suicide, but a sharp-eyed detective and Barr’s own fiancée soon discover discrepancies that point to a far more sinister truth hidden behind the green portières of the library.
