Good Fun for Mystery-Loving Film Buffs
Michael Mallory's Dave Beauchamp novels are consistently clever and amusing, and this is the best of the three. It even has the best title. They are all fast, breezy reads, but the mysteries, while over-the-top, are well-constructed, with plenty of twists and logical resolutions. The gimmick of the hero hearing old-movie voices in his head doesn't really add up to much, but the celebrity wisecracks add colorful punctuation to the proceedings, and film buffs like myself appreciate the references. This one carries over several characters from "Eats to Die For!" so that novel should be read first, although the mystery here is self-contained. I'm looking forward to #4, which, as usual, is teased at the end of this one.
