Classic fantasy, reminiscent of Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy but uniquely Schweitzer's own, as a prince tries to rescue his beloved from the God of Death. Highly recommended.
"Of its type, the story is exceptional. . . . memorable for its structure, striking scenes, and powerful emotional forces . . . and for [Schweitzer's] command of language and his revealed and welcome willingness to deal withlife's brutality and violence, both physical and emotional. . . . The story has surprises, which I admire and welcome, and . . . fine, effective phrases and exactly the right words.
- Richard E. Geis in Science Fiction Review.
"A gripping, fast-paced story."
- The Bookwatch.
"Schweitzer's use of language is very effective. . . . The White Isle is not the sort of fantasy we often see these days. It's a lovely, then horrific tale that is worth your while seeking out."
- Aboriginal SF
"The White Isle is a fantasy in the tradition of the unexpurgated Tales ofthe Arabian Nights. It has the feel of true myth . . . in the tradition of a Greek tragedy. I highly recommend this to those readers who care for the ancient tales and stories, those stories which haven't been tamed by the editors of children's tales."
- Fosfax
"Spare, economic horror set in a self-contained universe . . . good for some technicolor nightmares."
