Georges Feydeau (1862-1921) is considered by many critics to be the greatest comedy writer in France after Moliere. And this raucous farce from 1888 is a good example of why. It begins with a young man who can barely carry a tune being mistaken for a talented Tenor and signed by a rich man to an exclusive contract so as to bolster his bargaining position with the Paris Opera (to help get his daughter's recently written opera accepted for performance by that august institution). Thus begins a series of errors that keep on multiplying with hilarious consequences as the ersatz Tenor begins making love to the rich man's wife--and others. As in most Feydeau plays total confusion is the norm. Feydeau is also considered as precursor of Dada and Surrealism.
